Balance, Perfection Card Number: 8 With her scales, Justice weighs our lives and, with her sword, she cuts away the unnecessary and superfluous so we can achieve balance. Although she executes the law with her sword, it is tempered by the hand of prudence which can be seen on the hilt. Peace, the fruit of justice, is seated under the scales holding olive branches. The number 8 symbolizes perfection. It is also a double 4, 4 representing stability in Heaven and in Earth. She is a symbol of fulfillment. In a Reading Justice is a sovereign, powerful woman. As an incarnation of The Moon (XVIII), she may represent a mother or pregnant woman. She is balanced and spiritual and as such has clarity, giving valuable advice. With her sword and her scales. she asks us to eradicate excesses we don’t want or need. She asks us to give ourselves only what is justified and to be fair in our allowances. She teaches us to differentiate between objective and subjective judgements, she puts herself in the other person’s shoes. She bids us to weigh our thoughts and cut off our delusions. Justice may also be telling us that its time to do the right thing. Negatively she may represent a stern mother or matriarchal figure who’s demand for perfection is so overbearing it interferes with the ability to realize a solution. She can represent all destructive verdicts. Also Justice represents the powers and institutions of the state, courts, police…etc so she can symbolize guilt and the threat of punishment. Other aspects of Justice; respecting the law, being fair and ethical, seeking equality, “doing the right thing“, assuming responsibility for your actions, admitting involvement, doing what has to be done, considering all sides of the situation, accepting the consequences, understanding cause and effect/changing one’s behavior. |
